Your Holiday Gift Planning Checklist

When several gifts need to be ready at once, the small steps become the hard part. Use this checklist for Christmas gift planning or any busy season of giving, and work backward from the day each gift needs to arrive.

First, list the people and delivery dates

Start with recipients, then note whether you will hand over each gift or send it. Include group exchanges and any agreed price limits. A gift traveling across the country may need attention before one you will give in person.

Check the retailer’s current delivery estimate and the carrier’s published deadlines for your destination. There is no single shipping date that works for every order. Personalized items may also need production time before shipping begins.

Before shopping, choose ideas and amounts

Our gift budget guide includes a worked example you can adapt. If you are stuck for an idea, start with something the person has mentioned using, enjoying, or wanting to replace.

While shopping, record what is finished

Mark a gift bought as soon as you purchase it. Keep order confirmations and receipts somewhere you can find them. For online purchases, track arrival separately in your notes: ordered and delivered are different milestones.

One person, one quick check

Before buying another item, check the person’s existing gift idea, budget, and Bought status. This small pause can prevent an accidental second purchase.

After arrival, wrap and label

Inspect each item while an exchange is still practical. Remove price labels where appropriate, keep gift receipts, and label the wrapped gift immediately. Similar boxes become surprisingly difficult to identify later.

Keep the checklist somewhere you will use it

Giftedly keeps recipients, gift ideas, budgets, and Bought, Wrapped, and Card sent checkmarks in a private list. Create a list for the occasion and update it after each shopping or wrapping session. For next time, use our year-round gift idea routine so you do not have to start from scratch.
